A Strange Loop premiered off-Broadway at the Playwright’s Horizon in 2019 before moving to the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington DC, where it faced a delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic. At around 100 minutes, the show runs shorter than most Broadway musicals. It’s filled with earworms and runs without interruption.
The show has been lauded by critics and has received 11 Emmy nominations across wide-ranging categories from Best Musical and Best Original score to Best Acting and Best Lighting and Sound Design.
The protagonist is a young black queer man named Usher - played by Jaquel Spivey - who works as an usher at The Lion King's Broadway musical. He’s not happy with his job and he wants to be a musical theater writer himself. And the musical that he wants to write is about a black queer man writing about a black queer man writing about a black queer man, and it goes on. Now you know where it gets its name from. But it’s not going to be easy for him, not only because opportunities for people like him are limited, but also because he’s unable to escape his own limiting thoughts. It’s his internal monologues that make up the crux of most songs in the musical and are performed by an all-black, all-queer ensemble. He does manage to get a job offer to ghostwrite for Tyler Perry, which he reluctantly accepts. But will it help him solve his issues? Will it help him win approval from his family? Will it help him improve his relationship with his body and sexuality? Book A Strange Loop tickets to find out.

The Lyceum Theatre is one of the oldest Broadway venues still in operation. Opened in 1903, the theater itself is a thing of beauty. With a facade built in the Beaux-Arts style, you’ll be mesmerized by the venue before you get a chance to be fascinated by the show that it’s hosting. A Strange Loop has been playing here since April 2022.
