5It's a Thriller from start to finish at MJ the Musical on Broadway. More than just a jukebox play, this musical delves into Jackson's creative process, celebrity issues, and the inner challenges that molded his work. In MJ, a Pulitzer Prize–winning play by Lynn Nottage and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon spectacle and narrative are combined to pay tribute to a musical legend while recognizing his complexity. Nottage dramatizes the story using cliches from the jukebox playbook, but she does it crisply and in a way that makes it seem almost natural. The big concern, despite this trope, is the glossing over of Michael Jackson's more sordid history.
"MJ: The Musical’ is a bewitching watch"
"Wheeldon’s choreography — performed by Frost along with a superb if amazingly jacked ensemble — remains compelling longer, offering a three-dimensional version of what most of us have seen only from distant arena seats or in dark videos on depthless screens"
"maybe in that way, this equally exhilarating and confounding show really does have it right: Whether you believe the allegations made against him or not, there’s no question that a part of Jackson left the building on those world stages nearly 30 years ago"
