Set in 1863, the show follows the lives of the culturally and racially diverse residents of an NYC neighborhood whose lives and relationships are upturned by Civil War riots. This is the show’s first run on Broadway. The show addresses themes of racial harmony and discord, shadowed by societal friction. Through the nuanced relationships of the patrons of a local NYC saloon called Paradise Square, we are taken through the events that led to the devastating NYC Draft Riots that took place in July 1963. An otherwise sobering story is tastefully peppered with riveting dance performances which beautifully capture the intricate backgrounds of the free Black denizens and the Irish immigrants.
What happens when an unlikely friendship is challenged by the reality of civil unrest and dissonance? Paradise Square skillfully tackles the difficult task of narrating historic moments from America’s Civil War through an endearing story about the patrons of a local NYC saloon. The free Blacks and their neighborhood Irish immigrants have built a relationship of trust and harmony through friendly dance contests in Lower Manhattan’s ramshackle streets. But as the country’s political landscape shifted with President Lincoln’s institution of the Federal Draft, the carefree camaraderie of NYC’s harmonious communities soon gives way to devastating riots.
