Broadway’s favorite band of misfits is back—with a twist. Pirates! The Penzance Musical docks at the Todd Haimes Theatre, bringing Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved operetta to the Big Easy. This isn’t your grandfather’s Pirates: set in a lively, jazz-soaked New Orleans, the production trades powdered wigs for brass bands and patter songs for Caribbean swing. Leading the charge are David Hyde Pierce (Curtains), Ramin Karimloo (Les Misérables), and Jinkx Monsoon (RuPaul’s Drag Race), with direction by Tony nominee Scott Ellis (Tootsie). The creative crew also includes choreographer Warren Carlyle (Kiss Me, Kate), adaptor Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), and musical director Joseph Joubert (Caroline, or Change), promising a bold and rhythm-infused take on the classic. Whether you're a lifelong G&S devotee or just in it for the toe-tapping tunes, this rollicking revival brings plenty of reasons to jump aboard.
First staged in 1879, The Pirates of Penzance follows young Frederic, newly freed from his apprenticeship to a surprisingly sentimental band of pirates. He quickly falls for Mabel, the daughter of a famously fast-talking Major General—but just as freedom and love seem within reach, Frederic learns a crushing truth: born on a leap day, he’s technically only five years old. Duty-bound, he’s forced to serve another 63 years at sea. Mabel promises to wait... but with pirates, police, and plot twists aplenty, can love really weather the storm?

The Todd Haimes Theatre, formerly known as the American Airlines Theatre, is a Broadway landmark with a storied past and a commitment to theatrical excellence. Originally opened in 1918 as the Selwyn Theatre, it was lovingly restored and reopened in 2000 by the Roundabout Theatre Company. In 2023, it was renamed in honor of Todd Haimes, Roundabout’s longtime artistic director, who revitalized the company and championed thoughtful revivals and new works. The theatre offers an intimate yet grand experience, complete with elegant interiors that blend Gilded Age opulence—chandeliers, detailed plasterwork, and plush seating—with modern amenities.
