Inspired by Josefina López’s cherished play and the acclaimed film, turn back time to 1987 East Los Angeles, where dreams, determination, and familial connections intertwine most touchingly. Real Women Have Curves: The Musical is a vibrant celebration of ambition, kinship, and empowered women. With Real Women Have Curves, Joy Huerta is set to make history as just the second female composer of Mexican descent to grace the Broadway stage with her remarkable talent.
Before its Broadway debut, Real Women Have Curves made its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T) at Harvard University in 2023. The play made its debut at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco in 1990. In 2002, it was transformed into a film featuring America Ferrera, marking her debut in feature films, as the central character Ana García. Addressing themes such as body positivity, self-discovery, and cultural identity, the show connects deeply with anyone who has experienced the burden of expectations.
In the vibrant summer of 1987, Boyle Heights came alive in Los Angeles. Ana Garcia envisions herself soaring high above East Los Angeles, yearning for freedom and adventure. Her aspirations for college and a vibrant career in New York City are overflowing with potential. Yet, her family's expectations threaten to anchor her at home, toiling away in their garment factory while her mother drives her to the brink of madness. Should Ana pursue her dreams at the expense of her family's aspirations?
Ana, a first-generation Latina brimming with aspirations for college and a writing career, dedicates her summer to working in her family's vibrant garment factory. The musical intricately intertwines Ana’s journey with that of her sister, Estela, who operates an underground dressmaking venture alongside their mother; the various challenges faced by the other immigrant women employed there; and additional threads involving Ana’s internship at a local newspaper and her emerging romance with the charmingly bespectacled nerd, Henry, who also happens to be her rival at the publication.
Alongside her mother, sister, and colleagues, Ana embarks on a journey that unveils the strength found in self-acceptance and unity, weaving a narrative that honors women of every shape, size, and dream.

The James Earl Jones Theatre remains one of just two enduring theaters crafted by the renowned New York architect Thomas Lamb. In 1910, John Cort established the then-named John Cort Theater as a "lucky" venue, boasting a string of successful productions such as 'The Princess Pat' and 'The Yellow Jacket' in its history. In 2022, it was rebranded to pay tribute to the iconic actor James Earl Jones, marking it as the second establishment to bear the name of a distinguished black artist. A public event celebrated the homage, honoring Jones's extraordinary contributions throughout his illustrious career that has spanned over seven decades. The theater's design embraced a captivating French theme, showcasing a striking rectilinear facade adorned with an array of repeated geometrical units. While it shares neo-classical roots with numerous other Broadway theaters, it distinguishes itself with a stunning cream-colored facade adorned with elegant gold accents.
