The Story

An Enemy of the People is a five-act drama penned by Henrik Ibsen, originally published in 1882 as 'En folkefiende' and premiered on stage in 1883. In the play, Doctor Thomas Stockmann discovers that the local spa's water, the town's economic lifeline, is poisoned. Expecting gratitude for uncovering the truth, he is instead met with resistance from the town's political machine, including his own brother. He becomes a whistleblower, and a public campaign against him ensues. A moral battle unravels between this lone truth-teller and a society desperate for self-preservation.
