It premiered first in July 2015 in Washington DC at the Arena Stage. Ben Platt plays the lead and is also known for his role in Pitch Perfect. The show’s premise has encouraged discourse on youth suicide and mental illness.
The Story
Originally, Shange’s play was composed of a series of 20-22 poems, in a form coined by her as a “choreopoem”. Even in the present revival, the poems are each choreographed to music, and poignantly capture different facets of the struggles that African-American women have faced over the years.
The characters consisted of 7 nameless women, who were identified solely through the colors assigned to them. Through the stories of these women, the original play tackled sensitive subjects such as rape, abortion, and domestic violence – while weaving a connected web of shared sisterhood and trust across the different characters’ experiences.
