MJ The Musical on Broadway isn’t just a tribute, it’s an inside look at Michael Jackson’s creative world, framed through a 1992 rehearsal for his Dangerous World Tour. As MTV cameras arrive to document his process, Jackson revisits the memories, music, and moments that shaped his unparalleled career. Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon and written by Lynn Nottage, the musical premiered in 2021 and quickly became a Broadway phenomenon, earning 4 Tony Awards, including Best Choreography, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, and Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost (the original MJ).
The show’s design team, including Derek McLane (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes), and Natasha Katz (lighting), recreates the glamour and grit of Jackson’s journey, from his Jackson 5 beginnings to superstardom. With Gareth Owen’s powerful sound design and Wheeldon’s kinetic choreography, every beat and moonwalk feels as alive as the man himself.
Storyline
Set during rehearsals for the 1992 Dangerous World Tour, MJ The Musical on Broadway follows Michael Jackson as he prepares for the biggest concert event of his life. When an MTV documentary crew arrives, their interviews spark flashbacks that take the audience through the milestones of his extraordinary career, from his Motown childhood and Jackson 5 fame to the making of Thriller and beyond. As the rehearsal unfolds, so does the portrait of an artist driven by perfection, haunted by pressure, and determined to keep dancing no matter the cost. Through music and movement, MJ The Musical shows not just how Michael changed the world, but how the world shaped him.
