    Why watch Antony and Cleopatra?

    • Catch one of Shakespeare’s most thrilling love stories as Roman leader Marc Antony and Egyptian royal Cleopatra tumble through turmoil, lust and vicious fury.
    •  The Met hosts the world premiere of renowned composer John Adams's newest opera, a magnificent retelling of Shakespeare's timeless tragedy. The Guardian lauds Adams’ production saying “Like the play itself, the opera moves in a flux of conversation, action, emotion.”
    • Soprano Julia Bullock, who made her debut in the 2024 company premiere of Adams's El Niño, performs opposite bass-baritone Gerald Finley’s Antony as the alluring and complicated Cleopatra.
    •  In a new staging by visionary director Elkhanah Pulitzer, Adams himself conducts the opera, the tale of a tragic relationship and political turmoil from ancient Rome to the 1930s Golden Age of Hollywood.

Bringing Shakespeare to the glamorous but deadly age of 1930s Hollywood, this production is the Metropolitan Opera's first staging of Antony and Cleopatra. John Adams composed the contemporary opera which had its world premiere in September 2022 at the San Francisco Opera. As it recounts the tragic love affair between the Egyptian queen Cleopatra and the Roman commander Mark Antony, the opera explores the intricacies of love, power, and treachery. Elkhanah Pulitzer's direction transports the ancient story to 1930s Hollywood, offering a unique visual and narrative experience. Actor Paul Appleby plays Caesar, who opposes Antony in battle, while Elizabeth DeShong plays Octavia, Caesar's sister and Antony's abandoned wife. Book your tickets to experience the rare opportunity of having the composer, John Adams, conduct his own work.

    Storyline
