John Adams composed the contemporary opera which had its world premiere in September 2022 at the San Francisco Opera. As it recounts the tragic love affair between the Egyptian queen Cleopatra and the Roman commander Mark Antony, the opera explores the intricacies of love, power, and treachery. Elkhanah Pulitzer's direction transports the ancient story to 1930s Hollywood, offering a unique visual and narrative experience. Actor Paul Appleby plays Caesar, who opposes Antony in battle, while Elizabeth DeShong plays Octavia, Caesar's sister and Antony's abandoned wife. Storyline

Their passionate affair ignites political and personal conflicts, leading to a series of betrayals, wars, and sacrifices.
