The Queen of Spades is a loose adaptation of a 1834 novella of the same name by Alexander Pushkin that significantly alters the original story. Tchaikovsky's version is a far more dramatic and macabre satire of contemporary society, with a full score that he took only 44 days to complete. After opening to rave reviews in Russia, the opera travelled to Europe, opening first in Prague, before making its way all over the world and cementing itself as a classic.
In the late 1700s in St. Petersburg, toward the end of Empress Catherine the Great's rule, the stunning city bears witness to the gambling addicted officer Hermann's story. Despite his obsession, he steers clear of the act itself, focusing his mind instead on an unknown woman he has found himself having deep feelings for. When Prince Yeletsky arrives with his fiancée, Lisa, Hermann is stunned to learn she is his object of affection. Soon, his attention turns to Yeletsky's grandmother, the old countess, whose prodigal gambling skills are known only to two confidants. But a prophecy speaks of a third who may well be her ruin. Will Hermann be the one to fulfil this deadly deed, or will his love prevail?
