Born during Napoleon's occupation of Vienna in 1805, the opera's first premiere was played to an audience of French soldiers who couldn't understand a word. Undaunted, Beethoven spent years perfecting his only opera, creating three different versions before the triumphant 1814 premiere that we know today - an event so significant that a young Schubert sold his schoolbooks just to buy a ticket. In fact, owing to his obsession with editing and revising his work, the composer rewrote the first quartet nearly a dozen times!
The Met's current production, helmed by producer Jürgen Flimm, strips away period trappings to reveal the story's burning relevance. Catch the incredible work inspired by Les Deux Journées - a libretto by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly, with tickets to the opera Fidelio now!
Disguised as a prison guard named Fidelio, Leonore infiltrates the fortress where her husband Florestan is held captive. As she navigates a web of deception, including the unwanted romantic attention of the jailer's daughter and the murderous plots of the corrupt governor Don Pizarro, Leonore must summon extraordinary courage to save her beloved from his imminent death. As she illuminates the path to justice with her unwavering devotion, her love finally triumphs over tyranny.
