Broadway's mightiest roar: The Lion King's top songs ranked

Jenifer

One of the most iconic musicals of the modern era, The Lion King features a soul-stirring soundtrack with original music from Elton John blended with African influences, helmed by composer Lebo M. It additionally has the work of artists like Hans Zimmer peppered in. What results from this collaboration of some of music's greatest minds is a gorgeous, moving musical masterpiece that leaves the audience at the Minskoff Theatre yearning for more each time.

Here are some of the most beloved songs of the album.

Hakuna Matata

Simba's journey is sealed upon meeting Timon and Pumbaa who teach him the real meaning of "no worries." Unfortunately for the little future king, this means leaving everyone he loves behind for a carefree life as they languish under Scar's madness. But for the rest of us, it turns out to be one of the catchiest earworms ever created.

Chow Down

Simba and Nala's foray into childhood rebelliousness leads them straight into the fangs of the hyenas Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. In the musical, this chilling scene is accompanied by a rock-and-roll banger that perfectly encapsulates the excitement and danger of this choice.

Be Prepared

Scar's big moment is iconic, no matter how many times the tale of Pride Rock is retold. It's hard not to get swept up in this rune and find yourself almost rooting for him. Yet, the original film's rendition is hard to beat, so Be Prepared does not get top billing on this list. It holds its own, nonetheless, and is worth witnessing live.

He Lives in You (Reprise)

Originally appearing in the Lion King-inspired Rhythm of the Pridelands album, this gorgeous track focuses on the deeply spiritual aspects of this musical. For Simba, it is a connection to his father. But for audiences, it is a strong reminder of one's roots and where we come from. It is one of the most moving and emotional pieces of the show. It became so beloved, it would later feature in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride.

The Circle of Life/Nants' Ingonyama

Naturally, this list must end with the musical's iconic opening number, performed by Faca Kulu, Lebo M, The Lion King Ensemble, and Tsidii Le Loka. The Zulu chants of the song are timeless, despite most people not knowing what it translates to. They aren't missing much, since the lyrics are a simple reference to the approaching king of Pride Rock on the day of his son, the future king's introduction to the world. The musical expands these lyrics and hearing the ensemble cast perform this stunning piece is akin to a spiritual experience, with layered vocals that cut across the theater and leave you feeling like you are, in fact, in the presence of royalty.

Honourable Mentions

The Madness of King Scar comes very close to Be Prepared, as far as villain songs go, but Scar and Zazu's back and forth is brilliantly comedic. Meanwhile, the ensemble's rendition of King of Pride Rock/Circle of Life (Reprise) is a thrilling end to an iconic show.
