The 2024 Tony Awards promise a star-studded lineup of performances including all of the Best Musical and Best Revival of a Musical nominees. The ceremony is slated for June 16, live from David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. So, without further ado…
The evening kicks off with a 90-minute pre-show, The Tony Awards: Act One, hosted by Popular TV personality Julianne Hough (Dancing with the Stars) and actor Utkarsh Ambudkar aka UTK the INC (Pitch Perfect, Game Over). Then, viewers can tune in to CBS for the return of Oscar winner Ariana DeBose as host for the third year in a row.
If you’re looking for a way to jog your memory, the top performers from last season - Hell’s Kitchen, Merrily We Roll Along, The Outsiders, and The Who's Tommy, are expected to bring out their best for the TV audience. And there’s no reason not to swoon over Sufjan Steven’s coming-of-age musical - Illinoise. And of course, there’s no party without a little Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, which is set to present a performance filled with classic, sultry numbers, featuring the talents of Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin.
Other notable performances include selections from Water for Elephants, featuring Grant Gustin and that astonishing acrobat cast, and Suffs, backed by Hillary Clinton (hello!), which celebrates the suffragist movement with modern relevance and powerful storytelling.
There might be a few more numbers added to the list, but theater-goers were in for a surprise considering some widely acclaimed names were excluded from the list. The Notebook, The Wiz, Gutenberg! The Musical!, and The Heart of Rock and Roll have notably been denied the stage. In the words of playwright David Adjmi (Stereophonic), the makers “weren’t into it”.
While the actual list of numbers remains under wraps, we have taken the liberty to list down our favorite tunes from the season. We don’t know about Tony but we’d sure like to bust some moves to these iconic numbers.
Fortunately, that’s not the end of it. There are plenty of other bangers and tear-jerkers involved, and you can be sure that the best of them will make it to broadcast!
If, like us, you’re suffering from award-season fever, we recommend reading our list of nominees and everything you need to know before tuning in to the Tony Awards. Cue curtains.
