Appropriate on Broadway is not just another American family drama. This dark comedic masterpiece by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Obie Award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins offers a fresh take on family dynamics, hidden secrets, and buried resentments that come to light during a family reunion. The exciting cast, headlined by Sarah Paulson from Run and Corey Stoll from Ant-Man, delivers a remarkable performance that dives into the depths of a deeply troubled American family.
When the Lafayette family comes together in their late patriarch's Arkansas home, what begins as a warm reunion swiftly takes a mysterious turn. The arrival of an estranged brother and the discovery of dark objects among the clutter unearth unsavory secrets from the family's past. I had decent seats in the center orchestra, but under the mezzanine. The play was very good, and very well-acted. By "good" I mean that it was no Tennesse Williams play, but had an interesting mix of drama and comedy. The production recently moved from another theatre to the Belasco. I am unfamiliar with the theatre from which it moved, but suspect that it was a smaller house. Some, but not all, of the actors were not aware that they needed to project enough to fill what I suspect was the larger space at the Belasco during the more intimate conversations. Some dialogue was lost. Hopefully, someone will bring this to their attention. I loved both the sound and lighting designs, as well as the effects after the actors had left the story, showing the decay of the plantation house. Brilliant.
The script, the acting all of it was awesome. Very well done.
