Welcome to the Moulin Rouge! The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning film reimagines the 2001 movie, which grossed over $179 million worldwide and earned Catherine Martin two Academy Awards for Costume Design and Production Design. Written for the stage by John Logan, directed by Alex Timbers, and choreographed by Sonya Tayeh, the Broadway production premiered in 2018 at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre before transferring to New York’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2019.
At the 2021 Tony Awards, Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway swept with 10 wins, including Best Musical, Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Costume Design, and Best Orchestrations. The original cast featured Aaron Tveit (Tony winner for his role as Christian), Karen Olivo as Satine, and Danny Burstein, who earned his first Tony after six nominations as the show’s flamboyant host, Harold Zidler.

Storyline
Set in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris at the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway follows Christian, a young American writer searching for inspiration, who falls in love with Satine, the star courtesan of the Moulin Rouge cabaret. But Satine has been promised to the Duke of Monroth, whose fortune is meant to save the club from ruin. Torn between passion and survival, Christian and Satine’s secret romance defies fate and wealth, until tragedy forces a heart-wrenching choice.
