Hadestown musical in New York is a spellbinding reimagining of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, conceived by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, the Tony-winning visionary behind Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. What began as a 2010 concept album evolved into a full-fledged stage musical that took over a decade to perfect, travelling from Vermont’s DIY theatres to London’s National Theatre before landing triumphantly on Broadway in 2019.

The show’s journey was rewarded with 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Direction, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. With choreography by David Neumann, scenic design by Rachel Hauck, lighting by Bradley King, and sound design by Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz, Hadestown on Broadway creates a world that feels both ancient and immediate. Led by Jack Wolfe as Orpheus, Morgan Dudley (A Strange Loop) as Eurydice, and Kurt Elling, a Grammy-winning jazz vocalist, as Hermes, alongside Rebecca Naomi Jones (Oklahoma!), Paulo Szot (South Pacific), and the trio of Fates, this production delivers a powerful, soulful retelling of love and loss set to Mitchell’s folk-jazz masterpiece.

Storyline

Hadestown on Broadway retells the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice through the lens of a 1930s-inspired world where the underworld is a soulless factory run by the god Hades. When Eurydice makes a desperate deal to survive, Orpheus journeys to bring her back, guided by Hermes, watched by the Fates, and challenged by Hades and his queen, Persephone. Through soulful melodies and poetic storytelling, the musical explores love, faith, and resistance in a world where hope feels scarce. It’s a timeless fable, retold with rhythm, fire, and unforgettable heart.
