Why Watch Metropolitan Opera: Fidelio?
- Watch the triumphant liberation chorus that has been performed at historic moments of freedom, from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the reopening of the Vienna State Opera after World War II.
- This is Beethoven's only opera - a masterwork that took him over 10 years to perfect, featuring some of the most stirring orchestral music ever written for the stage.
- Under the masterful baton of Susanna Mälkki, experience the phenomenal vocal power of soprano Lise Davidsen paired with tenor David Butt Philip, alongside legendary bass René Pape - a dream cast bringing fresh urgency to a story that the musical genius called "the work most dear to me".
Born during Napoleon's occupation of Vienna in 1805, the opera's first premiere was played to an audience of French soldiers who couldn't understand a word. Undaunted, Beethoven spent years perfecting his only opera, creating three different versions before the triumphant 1814 premiere that we know today - an event so significant that a young Schubert sold his schoolbooks just to buy a ticket. In fact, owing to his obsession with editing and revising his work, the composer rewrote the first quartet nearly a dozen times!
The Met's current production, helmed by producer Jürgen Flimm, strips away period trappings to reveal the story's burning relevance. Catch the incredible work inspired by Les Deux Journées - a libretto by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly, with tickets to the opera Fidelio now!
