Why Watch Salome?

  • This season, the Met presents a fresh production of Salome, the first in two decades, under the baton of Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
  • Richard Strauss's score is a masterclass in orchestral color and dramatic tension, with the infamous Dance of the Seven Veils standing as a highlight of the opera.
  • Salome dives into the darkness of human nature, weaving a tale of lust, power, and retribution that remains as impactful today as at its 1905 premiere.
  • The staging reimagines the ancient setting through a contemporary lens, offering audiences a renewed perspective on this timeless narrative. Book your tickets for an unforgettable night of opera.

Premiering in 1905, Salome is Strauss's adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 1891 play that retells the biblical tale of the young Judean princess who demands the head of John the Baptist as her reward for performing the mesmerizing Dance of the Seven Veils. The opera's intense psychological landscape and lush orchestration have captivated audiences for over a century.

Storyline

Set in King Herod's palace, the opera follows Princess Salome's obsessive desire for the imprisoned prophet Jochanaan (John the Baptist). After her seductive dance for Herod, she demands Jochanaan's head as her reward, leading to a chilling and tragic conclusion.
