Why watch Gypsy?

  • The most awarded performer in Tony history, Audra McDonald, and the greatest musical of all time, Gypsy, join forces in this highly-anticipated revival hitting Broadway in 2024.
  • Adapted from the memoir of Gypsy Rose Lee, an American burlesque entertainer, stripper, actress, author, and playwright, this musical tells the story of a domineering mother who will go to any lengths to make her daughters Vaudeville stars.
  • With Tony Award-winning director George C. Wolfe and Tony Award-nominated choreographer Camille A. Brown at the helm, this iteration of Gypsy promises to be a knockout.

Gypsy: A Musical Fable, originally penned in 1959, is loosely based on a 1957 memoir by then-striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee. The musical focuses on Lee's mother, Rose, the ultimate "show business mother," and her relationship with her two daughters. The original production proved to be a hit, with many describing it as the "greatest musical of all time," owing largely to the nuanced portrayal of Momma Rose, a flawed and complex individual and a character that is certainly not easy for any performer to play.

Storyline

Louise and June, two young hopeful Vaudeville performers, spend their days on the circuit in the roaring 20s. Under the watchful, determined eyes of their mother Rose Hovick, the duo is poised for greatness. The family learns soon enough, however, that stardom comes with a price - one Rose is more than willing to pay to make her daughters stars.
