Aladdin on Broadway is all set to receive a new cast member: Sonya Balsara! Her recent works on screen include roles in FBI on CBS, Mozart in the Jungle on Amazon Prime, and Boarding School on Amazon Prime. She has also worked on the Pre-Broadway lab of The Karate Kid, Sense and Sensibility at Theatreworks Silicon Valley, and West Side Story in Tokyo, Japan. She will take over the starring role of Jasmine in Aladdin on Broadway from Shoba Narayan starting January 19 at the New Amsterdam Theatre.
Balsara has previously played the role for a few weeks last fall when Narayan was otherwise engaged. She will be making her official Broadway debut with Aladdin on Broadway.
Other cast members include Michael Maliakel as Aladdin, Michael James Scott as Genie, Dennis Stowe as Jafar, Zach Bencal as Babkak, JC Montgomery as Sultan, Milo Alosi as Kassim, Brad Weinstock as Omar, and Don Darryl Rivera as Iago. The music is by Alan Menken. Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin have worked on the lyrics while Beguelin has also created the book. Aladdin on Broadway is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw.
Ishita has been called dramatic all her life. Finally, she has decided to embrace it professionally. Being a student of literature, she has always been addicted to stories — those which she has heard a hundred times as well as those which have been freshly woven. If you find her staring into the horizon, mouth just a little agape, it is likely that she's imagining her life turning into a jukebox musical.
